Whether you’re looking for daddy-daughter time, going on a mom-date with your littlest man or taking the whole family, Portland is an excellent city for parents to get away with their favorite minis.
What you need to know
Home to more than 630,000 people, Portland is the largest city in Oregon. It sits between the Willamette and Columbia Rivers at the base of Mt. Hood and is known nationwide for its many parks and family-friendly attractions. Because of its size (there are more than 2.5 million people in the greater Portland area), Portland has a higher crime rate than many major US cities. Don’t let that deter you, however, as it does boast a number of safe neighborhoods perfect for a quick retreat with the kids.
Portland isn’t a sun-soaked city and averages 154-rainy days per year. Fortunately, these days are rarely complete washouts; it can take weeks to accumulate just three inches of rain and most of the precipitation is little more than mist. Bring a rain jacket, portable umbrella, and a water-resistant bag to store them in while you’re out and about.
Since kids often get sick while traveling, know that Portland is home to a number of quality health care clinics including the Walk-In Clinic at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital and Randall Children’s Urgent Care at Legacy Medical.
Now for the fun
What makes Portland so great for parents with kids in tow is its walkability. The Pearl District and Downtown Portland boast Walk Scores of 96 and 95 respectively. For comparison, San Francisco, which is considered one of the most walkable large US cities, scores just 86. High walkability is great for kids with short attention spans since there is always something new to do around each corner.
Food, fun, and farmer’s markets make Portland a kid’s playground. Don’t miss the city’s cadre of more than 500 distinct food trucks featuring everything from ice cream to Korean BBQ. Check out the Food Carts Portland map and pick at least three to visit while you’re in town. Portland Farmer’s Market also features unique dining options along with handmade gifts, artisans, a brewery, and kids cooking classes. Animal-loving littles will enjoy a day at the Oregon Zoo, which is open year-round and offers discounted admission from October 1st through the end of February.
Cultural encounters
The Portland Japanese Gardens unveiled its $33.5 million expansion in 2017. The Cultural Village features the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center along with a library and ample hand-on workshops throughout the year. From here, quick walk to Providence Park MAX Station will get you bus service to the Downtown Cultural District and its many museums, libraries, restaurants, and performing arts venues.
Biking by day
If you get tired of walking, Portland is a wonderful city for biking. Biketown offers more than 1,000 loaner bicycles with drop points throughout the city for your convenience. Sign up before you visit. For about $12 per day each, you and your capable kid rider can explore the city on open air style. Multi-person options are also available if you have child with disabilities.
